Completed your SIA training and wondering what happens next?
Once you have passed your course, there are a few steps you need to complete before you can receive your SIA licence and start working in a licensable security role.
Here’s our simple step-by-step guide.
1. Wait for your SIA course results
First, you’ll need to wait for your course results.
Results are normally released within around two weeks, although this can vary depending on the course and awarding process.
If you have completed your security training with Gurkha Security Services, your qualification is awarded through Highfield, an established UK awarding organisation.
As soon as we receive confirmation of your results, we will let you know.
Completed a one-day First Aid course with us? Your First Aid certificate will normally be issued separately from your security qualification.
2. Register for you SIA account
If you haven’t already done so, your next step is to create your personal SIA online account.
You can create your account after completing your course — you don’t need to wait for your results to do this.
Make sure the personal details you enter match your official identification documents, including your full name and any middle names.
Your SIA account is where you will:
- View your qualifications
- Start your licence application
- Receive messages from the SIA
- Track the progress of your application
Important: Do not submit your front-line SIA licence application until your qualification appears under ‘My Qualifications’ in your SIA account.
3. Start Your SIA Licence Application
Once you have passed your course and your qualification is showing in your account, you can start your application.
Log in to your SIA account and select:
Start a New Application
You will then be asked to complete the online application form.
As part of the application process, the SIA will carry out a number of checks, including your:
- Identity
- Qualifications
- Criminal record
- Right to work in the UK
- Eligibility to hold an SIA licence
Make sure all of the information you provide is complete and accurate, as incorrect information can delay your application.
Once your application has been submitted, the SIA will send you a ‘next steps’ message telling you what you need to do next.
4. Complete Your Identity Check
If you live in the UK, you will usually be asked to visit a participating Post Office to complete the next stage of your application.
Your SIA message will tell you exactly what you need to take with you.
At the Post Office, you will normally be asked for:
- Your SIA application reference number
- The identity documents requested by the SIA
- Your licence application payment, if you are paying for the licence yourself
The Post Office will check your documents and take your photograph.
The current SIA licence application fee is £204.
Not every Post Office provides SIA licence services, so make sure you check that your chosen branch offers the service before travelling.
Always follow the instructions provided in your individual SIA account, as requirements can vary depending on your circumstances.
5. Wait for Your SIA Licence Decision
Once you have completed the required steps, the SIA will carry out its checks and make a decision on your application.
You can monitor the progress of your application through the ‘My Applications’ section of your SIA account.
Make sure you also regularly check your ‘My Messages’ section, as the SIA may contact you if they need further information or documents.
If your application is successful, you will be notified by the SIA and your physical licence card will be sent to you by post.
Once your licence has been granted, you are ready to work in the security sector in the licensable activity covered by your licence.
