From 1 April 2021, SIA expects all applicants for a door supervisor or security guard license to complete a first aid qualification. The first aid course should be in line with the Health and Safety First Aid regulations 1981. The certificate must be valid for at least one year from the course start date or if you are applying for a license for the first time.
Please book at least a week in advance to secure your place.

Tutor must be reasonably satisfied with the demonstration. Those students who complete the course and are deemed to have reached the required standard are issued with a certificate that is valid for three years.
Your training provider also accepts the existing qualification certificate if it has a validity of a minimum of 1 year, but it must be in the list of First Aid Qualifications.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
We have moved training that is critical for all sectors to the ‘common unit’ (taken by all security operatives). This includes new training on:
- terror threat awareness
- dealing with emergencies
We have introduced new sector-specific content – for example:
- the close protection course includes new material on physical intervention
- the door supervision course includes new material on the use of equipment such as body worn video recorders and breathalysers
- the public space surveillance (CCTV) course includes new material on CCTV operational procedures and the law
- the security guarding course includes new material covering personal safety
We have increased the number of practical elements in the training to help learners reinforce their knowledge. The practical assessments include:
- searching
- dealing with conflict
- report/statement writing
- using communications devices
It depends on which licence you want to apply for:
- Door supervisor full course = 6 days
- Door supervisor top-up = 2 days
- Security guard top-up = 0.5 days
In all cases you will need to complete first aid training (Emergency First at Work or equivalent) before you take the top-up training. Unless you have a valid first aid certificate.
The first aid training is 1 day.
An Emergency First Aid at Work qualification (or equivalent) must be completed before taking the top-up training.
Door supervisors:
- use of equipment
- updated terror threat awareness
- physical intervention skills refresher training (knowledge and practical)
- knowledge around critical incidents eg. where to access government guidance on pandemic responses
Security guards:
- knowledge of physical intervention
- updated terror threat awareness
- knowledge around critical incidents eg. where to access government guidance on pandemic responses
- views from front line staff and security businesses on working practices, environments, and emerging technology
- input from the National Counter Terrorism Security Office and the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure to develop counter terrorism training
- advice from experts in specialist areas like physical intervention
- recommendations from coroner’s inquests following deaths involving security operatives
The security guard top-up training will be assessed by an exam. The door supervisor top-up training will be assessed by 2 exams (door supervisor knowledge and physical intervention knowledge) plus a practical physical intervention assessment.
The door supervisor full training course will be assessed by practical tests and multiple choice tests along with a written statement test. These will be taken throughout the course covering 4 different modules.

- Wear loose comfortable clothing, but it is not necessary to wear sports kit.
- All footwears must be closed in i.e., no sandals should be worn.
- Trainers are ideal footwear for this training.
Jewellery and watches must be removed prior to physical training, so candidates are advised not to wear any to avoid loss or breakages. Our Centre takes no responsibility for any items left or lost in the classroom.
As a condition of attendance all candidates accept that the trainer has the right to remove anyone from the training course at any stage, if necessary, to ensure a safe and effective learning environment for other participants. In the unlikely event this is necessary, no refunds will be granted.
*IMPORTANT*
In some occasion you may be put in mixed-gendered pair for the Physical Intervention part of the course. We treat everyone with respect and carry out all of our courses with the utmost professionalism. However we understand, this can be a concern so please do let us know prior to the class and we will find you a suitable counterpart to work with.
All units are assessed by an externally set and marked multiple-choice questions examination.
The practical assessment for all units is externally set and internally assessed through activity/observation.
Learners must successfully pass all the criteria to achieve a pass for the overall qualification.
Please allow 2-3 weeks for your examination results.
Short answer? No.
Although we will help and guide you as much as we can in the course, we cannot guarantee you will pass as that will be down to you. All of our tests are taken in exam conditions and you will be marked accordingly by our governing body (Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance).
If you are in the security industry and have regular employment as a security officer, you must renew your license every 3 years.
You can do this by attending a top-up course prior to your license expiring. You can attend a top-up course and renew your license as early as 4 months before the expiration date.
You are expected to show respectful and responsible behaviour throughout the training session. The course starts at 09:00 am in the morning. You must attend every day of the course and arriving late is not acceptable.
Please note that once you have booked a course with us it means that we have reserved time in our schedule exclusively for you. If you cancel your course less than 7 days before it is scheduled to take place, you will be subject to full cost and refund will not be issued.
